Since SSA doesnt answer the phone in under 3 hours....or ever. I hung up at hour 3 yesterday.

Has any folks collecting SS received a tax form in the mail? Online it only states they mail them at the end of January, but we havent gotten any. One we are waiting for is for a deceased parent and I can't make an online account for her. the system just says I cant.

Feel pretty stuck here. Any info is appreciated!

First off, sorry for your loss. Losing a family member is usually tough enough on its own, without all the paperwork and chores that somehow come with it.

Second, you're looking for tax forms for a deceased person? Without online access, you might have to lawyer up, if you don't have proof of being estate executor (and probably even if you do). The only remotely useful advice I've ever gotten for SSA forms that never showed up was to just estimate, based on prior numbers, but not sure if that applies to your situation and whatever number you are seeking. The staff usually want to help, but are overworked and restricted by rules/policies meant to discourage actually serving the public, mostly in the name of security.

Third, trying to reach anyone at SSA is already extremely difficult, but the newly-appointed acting commissioner is planning a 50% reduction-in-force. So there's that...

I've always had good luck with them .
Busy time of year though , and some weird stuff going on now .

Like said above , the website account gives you most things you want , but if trying to get something in another's name might be tricky , as said above .

When I do call , I leave my name and number , and receive a call back in under an hour .
When my wife passed , I had to make an appointment and do it in person .

yeah, I think we may end up at the local field office in person. rumors are the wait times are like 4 hours.

we pulled my wifes from her online account, but SSA wont let me make an acount for a diseased person.

My mom hasnt received hers either, maybe we will get lucky and they are just way behind with all the political shenanigans going on.

as Torch&Tone Torch&Tone said, so much to go through after someone dies. sadly its our third rodeo so we know the ropes better. the tax return is almost the last thing to wrap up - thus I am really wanting the 1099. so we wait...

thanks guys!

I get a 1099 from them in the mail every year. My wife seems to have misplaced mine for 2024 tax year. I'll either go online and print another or go fight the crowd at the local SSA office to get another.

Says she either left it on the kitchen table or on my desk. If it was left in either place, it would be in my tax folder. It ain't, and I'm pretty anal about keeping tax docs where they belong.

We didn't get ours. I had to go online and jump thru hoops to get a copy.

I have an online account with SSA, but no idea of the last time I logged into it or what email I had at the time lol. May be easier to fight the crowd at the SSA office.

I managed to get logged into my SSA account and a 1099 should be sitting in the printer when I go back to the house.

Sucks you have to go through this David. Best of luck. I got mine few weeks ago.
thanks Brian, its a pain, but we are on the home stretch. just taxes and closing the estate next week.

I got my taxes done couple days ago. No taxes for the 2nd year in a row. Feels great after paying in all my life. I did have to pay $200 for going over my income by a couple thousand but no sweat.

I got mine the first week of January as I remember being astounded. I am super fortunate also in that a nearby town over has a social security office and I can usually get them in the phone in 15 minutes or less. Folks in that office are super good to work with.

Can't be any help but wish you the best of luck getting it taken care of without too many hassles or wait times. Do you think some hot smoked goods would get you to the front of the lines faster lol?

My dad passed the first week in January, so I guess we will going through this next tax season. Should be fun as my mom just turned 91 ( they were married 66 years!).

Thanks David, I appreciate it. He was 2 weeks shy of his 92cd. Lived a good life but last couple years were in/out of rehab and hospitals. He was not able to get to the basement and do woodworking or wine making that he loved to do.

They are in PA and nearest hospital and rehabs were about an hour away. We were lucky that we built a house less than a mile from them so we get up often.
