  But I was actually paying closer attention to YOUR replies and advice.  I'm not building anything, but I felt like I was learning something from what you added.  It's always unfortunate when tempers flare, but I don't see you did anything wrong.  From a guy who's done quite a bit of welding/cutting and made a slew of mistakes, I know how great it is when someone sees something I didn't and prevents me from totally messing something up.  

If you're "Old School" then I'll definitely be following your stuff.  Kudos Brother.
 
Well i recieved a few pms asking if i would continue to show the rest of my build......so here it is for those who are interested. Chimney is 46" long 5" ID. Wire wheeled inside of CC, (gross), and pressure cleaned. Should I treat the inside, or will it be ok bare? Paint, oil? I dunno. Going to attempt to attach firebox tomm.

I would not paint the inside.....defiantly not the racks could end up on the food and cause a forgein object contamination......if you season the inside and keep a layer of oil on it, it should last you a very long time......just make sure to reapply oil and reseason if you ever washout the inside......as you know water and bare steel do not mix well....
 
yes, wait until done, after paint, during the first firing.. and then about every sixth month afterwards

great.....season inside and out like a cast iron skillet, dont paint inside. Note taken. I am looking for a design fir my smoke stack damper. Its going to have a 5.5" cap on top, and is 46" long. Any pics of diff designs to choose from? thanks.
 
should I wait until I am done working on it? wait until I paint outside? does anyone paint the inside? and racks?
I know absolutely NOTHING about anything you have/how you've done but I love how you guys do what you do (the whole cuttin metal, puttin it back together, etc)

I wouldn't think painting the inside/racks would be a good idea considering you want to keep it like a giant seasoned cast iron pan.

It would seem senseless to "season" the outside. The first thing your gunna do to prep for paint is to use a solvent to pull any and all oil out of the surface to be painted. Even oil from your hands would cause your paint to "fisheye" -- you'd beat yourself to death trying to get all the oil off if you had seasoned it. :)
 
After reading a post on seasoning cast iron the other day, I would reccomend not using vegetable oil to season it with. For one vegetable oil becomes sticky when "cured" and vegtable oil will go rancid after a period of time. I think I would use Flax seed oil like they reccomended for the cast oil cookware. It won't be sticky or go rancid.

You could make your racks out of expanded Stainless steel. Then you don't have to worry about them rusting and could even be pressure washed to clean.

i thought about stainless on the racks, but that stuffs pricey. i watched a few youtube vids on iron skillets and smokers, and i might try peanut oil, or canola. i think ill do the outside too after the paint has cured well. thanks for the compliments on "cutting stuff apart and putting back together". I enjoy my career in weldinf and fabrication very much.   still looking for a smoke stack damper design tho......hmmmm.....Lang uses a weird damper on thiers......i dont care for that style at all.
