I have done it with good results.  I simply add a half pan cooling rack to the bottom of my foil pan.  I got the idea from BearCarver.  Here is a link to amazon amazon" style="max-width:120px">.  Just make sure the rack will fit your pan.  This keeps the butt out of the juices but catches everything.  You might loose a little of the smokeness but to be honest I can't tell much of a difference.  I just tend to use a stronger flavor of wood like hickory or mesquitte.  I have done this 3-4 times now all with great results.  Plus the clean up is a breeze.

Yep keep it off the bottom.

I usually place it on the grates and a pan below, your gonna want to remove the grease from the drippings or your PP will be greasy.

That sounds nasty "PP to greasy"

Good luck and keep us posted.

Like they said, it works fine. You just don't get quite as much smoke on it.

I usually run without the pan till the butts get to 165, then into the pan and cover with foil. Works great.
