I have a Camp Chef XXL , it is not insulated. How long can I keep smoking outside before it becomes futile?
I kinda wish I kept my MES, I smoked with that thing in a middle of a snow storm.... Just had to have smoked wings.

You can use it all winter. It will just consume more pellets keeping up to temp. Used my RT when it was -5°. Going to make some type of cover with a welding blanket for this ND winter.

i live in ND also but never tried below 0.. i use uhaul blankets on my smoke hollow and never burnt em yet in yrs... when calm to 10 degrees. always good luck..

I use a moving blanket but keep the temps 225 or less

You probably won't have any problems with it as long as it's not windy. You can cook no problem in freezing temps, but wind will cool down a thin walled cook chamber real fast. As others have mentioned, just get your cooker some kind of jacket or blanket. Any amount of insulation will make a big difference, no sense in spending a bunch on a fancy one. The body of a pellet grill doesn't even get hot enough to justify a welding blanket.

If you have a Harbor Freight near you, you can pick up a welding blanket pretty cheaply. That's what I use, folded over, on my GMG Daniel Boone. Used it prior to that on my cheapie horizontal. It helps keep a good temp, and saves on pellets, too.

Rec Tec makes a insulated cover that I have used all winter in Utah. Many use the welders blanket in the same manner. Pellet smokers will work, they consume many more pellets when is super cold tho - even with the blanket.

Better off trying to find a blanket local before going to McMaster-Carr. They are crazy expensive 99% of the time!

When I bought my Traeger the rep actually recommended a welding blanket Instead a Traeger one. I went with a Traeger anyways since I think its more of a pain to deal with while cooking or using the fold up tray.
