Just got back from the comp. Didn't get to stay for awards.
Tasted a few of the pros q and a bunch of the back yard q's.
Nothing just blew me away so i guess my stuff must be pretty good.
Did get the word out about the site and was amazed at how many never even thought of the web as a place to look for info.
Highlight of my day was getting to sit and talk w/ johnny trigg for a while .
We discussed the show and they start filming the new season in april.
Said he believes it's moving to sunday night .

Was suprized that over 90 % of the pros do not use the big pits (trigg does) Most use mulitple small well constructed smokers and/or pits.
this comp was charcoal / wood only and had 50 pro teams and 60 bqackyard teams.
They turned away 18 pros and i don't know how many backyard teams .

I'd love to try the pros stuff and see how it compares to mine!
Johnny Trigg seems like a nice guy on tv, bet he's even nicer in person. Lucky you!

There were 50 pro teams and 60 back yard teams.
as we walked thru the pros after walking thru the B Y side . The wife commented , These folks must be thru cooking , I asked why and she replied theres no smoke.
had to do an explination of TBS and why it's important.
was standing in front of one of the pros pits as i explained. he told me and the wife . Finally, Someone who knows what the hell they are talking about !
He let us taste some of his stuff and let me taste his rub.
Had a good time and will go back next year .hopefully in the back yard comp.

Now I bet you could stand up to those guys in either category too. It's nice that you could talk to Johnny Trigg to I would have given alot just to sit and talk to him myself. He uses one of those jambo's doesn't he. At least on the show I thought I remembered that he did. Now it sounds like you got what you wanted from that comp. maybe that you are that good.

Not ready to compete w/ the big dogs quite yet but i think i could have held my own w/ any of the back yard boys that i tasted.
Most of them were local folks that were just trying to raise money for two great charites.
The way they worked it was at each booth you made a donation of a dollar or two and you got to taste everything they had cooking.
Had everything from q to fish tacos.
The booth that collected the most money in their donation jar was the peoples champ.
The charities were special olympics and assc . retarded citizens.
Both great orgs . in my book
i think we spent more money on donatons than we did on beer and soda/ water

Trigg had the same pit he uses on the show .don't know the name.
ALOT of the pros used small pits and smokers , Saw 2 of the smallest cajun microwaves i have ever seen used on the pro side.
Maybe 28 " long by 12' wide .

As y'all folks from the south know, Sweet tea is a religon unto itself down here. They have a sweet tea comp at the babbq.
There was one DQ yesterday and was one of the funniest things i've seen in a while.
One of the contestants decided to be (FUNNY ) and spiked their tea w/ what i think was cheap rum.
Only problem was that there were 2 judges that were young teenage boys. The look on the first boys face when he tasted that tea was something i've never seen b4 and hope not to see again.
How he happened to be the first to taste it i don't know but needless to say no one else tasted it. From what i heard the offending team was asked to pack their chit and leave the grounds.

That sounds like a fun time to be had, I've never been to a bbq comp, I don't even know if there are any around my neck of the woods, I'm in northern IL, if there are I'd love to go, I like the fact that the backyard comp was for charity, that's cool, we have a son w/ special needs, and it's great to know there are people doing this to help support that

All most forgot,
THe Hammond La . Harley shop had a HOG gathering at the same time as the comp. Heard that sweet roar all day long.
Want to thank the HOGs as they all came to the comp and spent lots of $$$ to help the cause.
My estimate was 2000 - 3000 bikes throughout the day.
