Smoker Design

Hi All;

I'm from Houston Texas and would like some recommendations about building a smoker.  Is there any rule of thumb for the firebox volume in relation to the main cooking chamber? Also, what sort of paint finish works best: paint vs ceramic enamel coating.  Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.
