I'm sorry if this post is very redundant. I tried to do a search but at over 5000 posts it was difficult to find the info I am looking for. Perhaps someone can tell me where on this forum I can find the difference between cold vs. hot smoking, and what you would use each method for. Thanks folks.
 
I think its just covered in different posts, you just have to read.

simple answer, 

cold smoke , for curing, or flavoring

hot smoke, for cooking

that is a very simplistic answer, and of course it can be more complicated, I'm sure
