I just finished my UDS and have been seasoning it for a couple of days. I want to keep it in my deck, but was not sure if the heat was a problem. It doesn't seem to get that hot on the bottom, but just to be sure I thought I'd ask. Should I build a platform to keep it off the deck? If I do need to build a cart are there any plans available? Thanks again for all the help this forum provides. My UDS looks great. Now all I have to do is figure out how to get it to stay one temp without having to mess with it.

thanks again,

You should have something between your deck and your smoker for sure. I didn't think I needed anything between a metal dish that I put my ashes is from the chips in my Gosm. I found out one time when I came out and the de ck was smoldering and had a nice big burn mark on it. So yes build a cart if you need or at least out it on fire bricks and get it off the deck.

I don't use my UDSs on a deck so I just have them resting on 3 bricks... You could look into a drum dolly. Kind of like a furniture dolly, flat with 4 wheels, but made of metal instead of wood... Northern Tools sells 'em.

I built a dolly that is just a frame of 2 x 4s with wheels on the bottom.

You're right the bottom of the UDS doesn't get very hot. But I would not use any smoker/grill on a wooden deck, especially a charcoal one but that's just me.

Some flat steel, a few bolts an some casters from harbour freight an now it's mobile. Wasn't to awful expensive to do. Use it on the deck, with winter comin, gonna wheel it inta the shop.

Is your lid balanced on top of your USD or do you have guides welded inside the top of the USD to center it to prevent it from falling off?

I put a ring inside my drum that the lid fits over.

It's simply a piece of aluminum flat stock, 1" x 1/4" that I rolled on my ring roller an riveted in place. Ya don't need a ringroller (I got one, makes it easy) with aluminum ya can bend it around the inside a yer drum an clamp it in place. If ya don't have a rivet gun (ya can get one perty cheap) you can drill an bolt it in place to.

Mine is gettin better all the time as the drum continues ta season.

This ring will also come in handy if momma santa clause brings me a ribolator fer Christmas! I'll add another section of drum to the top a Trident 1 fer a rotissere. It will fit right over the top an be good an steady that way. If Christmas dreams come true, I'll share that mod to!

Just built this one for mine..

Since I took that picture I actually cut a 14" round hole in the center to let the heat escape as it seemed my drum was running a little bit hotter than usual.. (DDave Mod)
