Sawdust

Has anyone ever purchased dust from the Frantz Company? I was given a small trashcan of sawdust years ago from a buddy whos mother was a chef. I only use it on my Littlle Chief as it does a great job on smoking cheese, but I am almost out and never seem to be able to find something similar. They look like they have the same stuff- any reviews of their products? or service? price?

I sometimes buy hickory dust from The Sausage Maker.com, I'm not sure what you have but I'm happy with the results.

I talked with the salesman at Franz this morning. Real nice guy and very reasonable pricing. He said they usually deal in pallet sized orders, but would gladly sell me a 40# bag as well. For the 100% hickory they were asking $17 plus shipping charges and for a mix (hickory and beech) it was closer to $10 bag plus shipping.

I never thought about using sawdust until just recently I saw the YouTube video of a guy putting cheese on the warming rack of his gas grill then partially filling a tin can with sawdust and sticking a hot soldering iron in the can under the cheese. I'm thinking about giving that a try.

I think what I'll do seeing as how I have some mulberry, apple and oak limbs that I need to cut into smoking chunks is I'll wash out my shop vac and hook it up to the chute on my power miter saw and use it to cut the smokin chunks with. That way I'll have sawdust to use for cheese too.

By the way the "dust" that I speak of is roughly 1/16" chips. More like the product of a chainsaw (minus the bar oil)

Actually, I'm now thinking about hosing out my chipper shredder and running some branches through with the smallest grate in place.

Midwestern Research carries it as well. Not quite as good a deal as direct from Frantz, but an option if they don't choose to deal with smaller orders. Certainly a better deal than The Sausage Maker or Allied Kenco has on bulk sawdust.

I got an old miter saw (electric) that I cut up branch's fer chunks. When I'm done "Chunkin" I sweep up the sawdust fer smokin as well. Makes a perty decent sawdust.
