Sorry if this is a repeat. I did a search. as I've made entirely clear, I despise every second I have to spend in my local Costco (not to mention check-out. My local Costco typically has Sh$t for meat. I just did a search locally for tri-tip.
It seems lot of my searches come up with Sam's Club or members mark as an answer. I don't mind having another membership, but I don't think they'll let me scope it out before I get a card. What's yall's thoughts on Sam's Club?
There's one right by my local Walmart super store which is lot closer than a trip to Costco.
TIA John

That is almost opposite of what we have here in Texas. CostCo has way more meat options compared to the Sam's Club 5 miles down the road.
They have cut back on the amount of Prime Beef they carry, guessing with the price, people have pulled back and sales declined.
I am also a huge fan of Wild Fork. We are lucky enough to have one right by the CostCo.

I've had memberships at both, and was happy with both, but Sam's Club was 20 years ago (I moved; no longer have one close by) and I'm currently a Costco customer. I can't make a head-to-head comparison based on recent experience.

But, it usually works to go in the exit door, tell the checker you are going to the customer service counter which will be nearby, then just keep walking into the store. Scope it out all you want, it's only the checkout lanes that will be inaccessible if you don't have a membership.

Sam's here does not ask to see your membership. We go about every other week or so.
Usually, a greeter is there to say Welcome.
I like Sam's because I skip the checkout completely with their "Scan and Go" with the Sam's App.
Protein selection is as good as Costco.

I would say they would let you scope it out no doubt before signing up. I think you can get some sort of trial membership or something similar. And from what I remember it’s cheaper than Costco. Used to have both but not very close and didn’t go very much. They are building a BJ’s wholesale within 7 miles excited to check that out once it opens never been in one.

I like wild fork too, and they have them down here. I was surprised that all meat in the store was frozen. not a huge deal, but traveling to my closest wild fork is a 1 hour Miami traffic delima.

Thanks all,
I've spent $25 on stupid shit I didn't need before. at least it reminded me to cancel my costco auto renewal. I'll find out at 10am tomorrow.

Give us an update on what you find. Have had a Costco gold membership for years. Ours is so busy I don't like to go very often but my wife does.

We have a large Sam's Next to Super Walmart that I go to weekly. I have never set foot in Sam's though. Maybe it's time I give it a try.

I can't speak for Sam's in other areas, here where I live in Norcal, Costco is much nicer, cleaner, and the people that work there are far more friendly, and helpful.
Costco's meat department is 100X better than Sam's as far as selections, pricing, and meat quality. I'm glad I only paid $14 for my Sam's membership back in April, I see no need to re-up it when it expires.
They are both crazy busy at times, Costco is far more busy on average, but I'm retired, so I go during the week on off hours to combat the crowds.

This.

Sams will let anyone in the door. Its at checkout where you must be a member.

And Sams scan-and-go is great.

However, I've never been in a Costco so I have no opinion on the comparison of the two.

Yeah, Wild Fork being frozen adds an additional day or two of planning ahead of a cook. I am lucky to have a Wild Fork 10 minutes down the road.

Yes sir! I use the scan and go on the app also. Its nice to be able to just roll on out and It helps to keep with how much I'm spending also. I'm bad to just cruise the aisles and load the basket up. This helps to KINDA keep my spending in check!

My experience has been that the meat quality is better at Costco. Costco also has a much better variety. However it is more expensive.

I shop at Sam's more because their peripheral items are better or more cost efficient. Foil pans, paper towels, baby diapers, etc.... also Costco has some weird hold ups like only have boneless pork butts, but Costco will carry higher quality pork ribs. It's a bit odd sometimes & the fact that Costco won't let me see what is in-store on their app really costs them a lot of my business.

But why do the Sam's Club bananas look like members of Fight Club? Seriously. Those things look brutally banged up every time I'm in there.

Sam's is an unfinished furniture store up here. So I'm betting the meat selection is better at Costco.

Obviously these stores vary. People are addicted to their Costco. Apparently they have some good stuff but they dont have a trial period, much like Sam's. You can open a membership at either and cancel paying only 1 month pro-rated...I think.

I'm a Sam's club member. Been that since before they built the Costco in the city near me. I think I would get in financial trouble in Costco, they have some interesting stuff based on what I have seen other people having/buying. Sam's is not terrible, but you cant count on them forever. They will carry a product, a meat cut, frozen item, whatever, for some years and you get accustomed to getting that product...then one day...BAM...they no longer carry it now that you have built your meal plans on whatever that was. Paper towels, tissues and napkins are big items we buy there. Their brand of those products are as good as any.

The main reason I stay with Sam's...Peanut oil! That's right, I consider it the best oil for deep frying. Sam's has a large container of it that brings the cost down to "almost" acceptable. Walmart sells a fairly decently priced jug somewhat smaller, but the stuff is like gold around here otherwise. Costco here is useless for peanut oil.

I dont buy much meat from Sam's. I seldom make a menu, then go shop for it. I shop the grocery deals, then build my menus around that. I'm not a pro and dont cook for gatherings, etc. so I dont HAVE to go and buy a specific cut of meat, ever. I can wait until they are on significant sale. So much that both of my freezers are packed as well as using freezer space at my parent's next door! I just noticed butts at .99¢lb at a store I'll be near soon...sadly no freezer space! I COULD just go ahead and smoke one or two, but I'm just not craving PP the last couple years; but I use butts to grind my own, make chorizo, etc.. You need freezer space for those packages too! The weekly sales, the best of them, at the grocery chains, are far better prices than Sam's (and I would guess Costco). One thing I AM a bit of a pro at, is power shopping.

What others said about "security" at Sam's is correct here too. They no longer have the ridiculous "checkpoint" at the entrance demanding you "show your papers!". But you cant check out without an account (back in the day you could shop as a guest and pay 10% more).

I also second what others said about "scan and go". I love that, but you still have to go through the "show me your papers!" checkpoint on the way out. This can be several minutes of a line. That doesn't always work for them though. I didn't realize it until probbaly a day or so after, but I had failed to scan one of those aforementioned big jugs of peanut oil...the exit check missed it too. When I called to say I was sorry and how could I pay for it? They told me the only way to rectify it was to bring it back and scan it and pay for it, but they appreciated my honesty. For a special trip, that would be at least $6 in gas and an hour and half of my time. I decided to "keep the contraband" and do better next time. At least I was honest and remorseful.

I've never stepped foot in a Costco since there are none that are close.

Sam's is close and is great for bulk items, meat prices are competitive (and sometimes better prices.) We only buy what seems sensible (to us) at Sam's. That scan and go app is a game changer for an introvert like myself. Get my stuff, scan as I go, out the door. I love that!

I usually grab a $4.98 chicken as well. Can't beat that price for a whole rotisserie chicken.

All that being said, I'd love to check out a Costco!!! Hope to get a chance some day.

The last two times I used scan and go at Sams, they did not check my basket at the door. Did not even scan the QR code on my phone. They've got something new that tells them I'm, as they both said , " good to go " .

Same here on my last trip there. I mentioned it and the lady said " You were checked when you walked through that." As she pointed to this. An AI device

A lot to read above, but I recently joined Sam's on a $25 membership. Missed the $14 sale, but I'm good at 25. The Costco I go to has pork bellies, and years ago the Sam's by me didn't so that was the decision maker. Also, Rx for my dog was waaaayyyyyy cheaper at Costco than the Vet's office. I still have to swing into the Sam's but I'll get over there this week sometime and see how it compares. What I will say about the Costco I use (Norfolk) is the parking sucks, and it's in a crappy part of town....that and it's a far longer drive than the Sam's. The meat prices just are not all that. Normally the only thing I buy there are bellies, lamb loin chops (I LOVE those) which of late have been very reasonably priced compared to the other stores, and lamb legs and roasts. Other than that I don't buy anything else on a regular basis.

Thanks guys...
Ok, forked up the $25 and visited. The Sam's closest to me is in a kinda ghetto-like area.
The meat selection was ok, but not exciting. Prices didn't seem much better than my local Latin meat store. With the rapid scan and go I might run in for something, but won't be a regular.
Ribs were high $2.59/lb. has some nice thick chuck roasts at $5.99/lb. Mama usually buys those for ropa vieja or crock pot so I don't know if that's good. Very small prime meat section and that looked questionable. whole brisket was $3.98/lb. but my Latin meat guy will slice off a point for me if i need.
Walked out empty handed. Store is basically as FU as costco with no intelligible organization.
couldn't even find the bulk spices.
