On my way to Sam's the news reported Sam's layed off 11,000 workers.

Sure enough when I went inside all the food demo people were gone. They had a mandatory meeting this am and were walked out.

I was sad to see my many friends gone without a warning.

well i turned in my membership at Sam's years ago because of poor customer service... not that i want anyone to be out of work... but i think sam walton toss i his grave at night because of what his company has turned into...

It almost sounds like a tax dodge or something. They are outsourcing the product demonstrations to another company in AR. That company is going to hire the same amount of people.

I'm sure it will cost the re-hires either money, convenience, or both. It wouldn't surprise me if "Shopper Events" and Sam's Clubs didn't have some common names on the rolls of their board of directors.

I hate seeing these poor people loose their jobs. And thanks to Wally World moving all the manufacturing jobs to China they don't have many places to go now that "the great employer of America" is finally feeling the pinch they helped to create.

I just hope a crapload of the executives are loosing their jobs too.

No I don't think so.

There has been a company managing the demo's at Costco and a lot of grocery stores for years- Sams has finally realized that if you dont have to pay the employee benefits they could save lots of $$$ - The folks that were doing the demos will find jobs with the new company and might actually make more $$$ - just my .02

Sam's isn't the only one laying off. The regular Wally World stores around here are ramping up for a big layoff too. My sister inlaw had her hours cut last week and they posted the official layoff list this week.

Ron, it is sad. In today's economy you've got to stray strong to be a survivor, and a little prayer doesn't hurt.

That is really too bad. We don't have a Sam's but, the Costco I enjoy employ many demo people who are definitely using the wages to supplement their meager social security benefits. We just got hit with another increase in Medicare Part B, with no increase in Social Security to help cover the difference. But, of course, our elected officials gave themselves another "fine" raise, buried in amongst all that paperwork they call legislation. I didn't mean to hijack this thread in a different direction but, with the demo people earning the bottom end of wage scale, it really adds to their difficulties.

I use both Sam's and Costco. Believe it or not I joined Sam's to buy the MES, since it wasn't a product my local Sam's stocked, once a member I could buy it via Sam's online service. I have been a Costco customer almost since they opened. There are some differences between Sam's and Costco, one is Sam's hardly ever has any lines. I was shopping at both Sam's and Costco this past Christmas, at Sam's no lines, at Costco, every cashout register had a line 10+ deep. So guess where I went first to do any shopping. My wife has gone through our local Sam's twice, and shops weekly at Costco, and is fairly convinced that Costco on the average has slightly better pricing. Personally I think it depends on the item, Costco has some lower some higher, I am comfortable at both places buying something because the prices are not rip offs. I would hate to Sam's fold they help keep Costco competitive.

Sam's owes my patronage thanks to Ronp, he has been touting Sam's since I joined SMF and convinced me to keep using Sam's.

This is in large part why I try to shop my locally owned grocery stores when possible. We have a chain here called Super One. They are locally owned and I will shop them before Sams or Cub or any of the other corporate big boys. I don't always get my meat there we have several small meat markets where I usually shop for that. But the personal service I get from the local grocery chain is something you are not going to find at Sams. I can sometimes go to the store to just pick up a couple of items and be gone for a hour and a half because I wind up in a conversation with the meat manager or produce guy or someone else I have gotten to know quite well over the years.

Not that the corporate big stores don't employ local folks they surely do. But they don't show the loyalty to their emlpyees like the locally owned chains will.

That's a huge pink slip sorry to hear.

Sounds like the bank, gm bail outs and cash for clunkers are working

The official tally was in before Christmas on the Cash For Clunkers scam. Err, program.

The bottom line was, each clunker cost the tax payers $24,000.
