I am a UDS guy. I would like to try hanging ribs. Im wondering..do I really need a special rack to hang ribs? Cant I just hang them on the weber grate?? If weight /bend is an issue, couldnt I just lay rebar across the grate at a 90 degree to the grate?

Why hang? Just coil 'em . Works perfectly for me.

The only issue is being too close to the heat source (dry pan or not).
My Bronco lets me hang the average rack of baby backs off one of the hangers, but I have to either trim it down a bit or remove the heat deflector, so I guess it depends on the dimensions of your UDS.

Now that's interesting. I've never seen that done before.

It sure helps to have a rack you can navigate around, but in all honesty.... drums are a throwback to open pit barbecue, so you can improvise all kinds of set-ups for hanging meats.

The bottom line is... you will be surprised at the amount of ribs and whole loins you can hang, but as you know, the flavor is something special.

Out of curiosity has anyone who hangs ribs ever had them fall off towards the end? That would piss me off

I have not, although my hooks have a long enough shank to go 2 or 3 bones down. I did do a double hook on my first few racks, and still do this on full slabs of spares.

One of my favorite meats to hang are pork loins. They only take about 90 minutes. Great for a football Sunday or to take to a pot luck.

Rebar works just fine.
In the early 1980s I never saw Drum cooker with a grill, they all used rebar and hooks. People, including myself over engineer these cookers more times than not these days.
