But seriously, I love your input - keep those ideas coming (within reason and budget of course lol).

you asked for it.... Well when you fab'ing up the shovel don't forget a "T-Post push pull poker so he can push and pull coals into the shovel as well as move them around in the unit... something like this.

and I wonder if JIMSMOKES JIMSMOKES really understands how much his "grilling" experience is going to change....? I think you need to install a remote go pro that has a live fee to this thread so we can see the grin on his face every time he fires it up.....LOL

I'm more excited about learning how to drive a grill like this than anything other I've ever used.
I'm installing some new security cameras. Maybe I can set one up! LoL

Yep - that one's already in the plans. I figure everyone who cooks on a Santa Maria with a brasero needs a shovel and a coal rake. And while I'm not sure I'm making heads-or-tails out of your drawing, I think we're on the same page lol.

I'm planning something that will have a rake-head on the end something similar to this image (random image I found on the 'net).

I'm not gonna lie Jim...it'd sure be fun to watch that!

The rake is the idea, there is also a near to go side to side…..so I was drawing a in line blade to make a combo rack front/back side/side spreading….. it was me multi tasking on a teams call….lol

I have grandad stuff going this weekend, but wanted to make a quick post to update on what I got done in the shop yesterday. I finished the brasero, and got it welded to the side of the grill.

Here's what I came up with for the front face of the brasero. This should keep the logs/fire tamed and allow for easy access to add more logs/splits.

I also trimmed out the top with some angle iron to give it a little more of a finished look.

And here it is welded in place on the left side of the grill.

Should be plenty of room to shovel coals out of the bottom of the brasero after the firebricks are in place.

It'll probably be Monday before I get back in the shop, but the "to-do" list is getting shorter! The biggest job left is to finish the grate truss, work on the wheel and ratchet assembly, and fabricate the cooking grate. I also need to build a side table for the right side of the grill cabinet...but all-in-all, this project is reaching the home stretch!

Thanks for stopping by Friends!

Totally Awesome Dude ...

My concern is going to be about not enough red hot coals staying on the grate to keep the splits flaming/burning... We encountered this problem on a big reverse flow smoker that Mark Discus39 Discus39 built... His grating in the firebox was about the same spacing you have...

To be honest, Keith, I had the same thoughts about this. But I did a fairly exhaustive search of existing braseros for open fire cookers, and they're all are designed like this. So I decided to stick with accepted design. Maybe the difference is it's open air? Plus, I think the idea behind this is a bit different than in a closed firebox for a RF smoker - this grate is supposed to let the coals fall through...so they can be shoveled under the cooking grate. At least that's what I think the idea is supposed to be.
