Really wish I could have a outdoor cooking area. That had that kind of room for built in's.

Agreed Jim! I'm in the same boat. My back patio is tiny, and isn't covered anyway. All my outdoor cooking gear has to be mobile so I can store here - roll it out and cook on it there lol!

I hear ya both being doing that since the dawn of my smoking life….. so now that I finally have the opportunity to have the Smokehouse Way space I’m beyond words. It’s not a build in thing but hopefully soon no more rolling around before and after!!!

I've got a decent progress update today! I went to work on fabricating a cart to set this grill on.


Just roughed in here, and tacked together first.

I wanted to get it in place to see how the fit-up was gonna be - not bad, but I'll have to do a little adjustment to get it square and level before welding it in.

Next I got some caster feet cut out of some 1/4" plate, drilled holes for the caster bolts, and got them tacked in place on the cart's legs.

Got her all adjusted where it fits, it's level and square, and started welding the cart to the main body of the grill.

I didn't quite get finished with the weld-out. I ran out of welding gas. I'll have to make a run to the welding supply for a new bottle of shielding gas before I can move on.

But after I get the body and the cart all welded out, and get the whole assembly down on the floor, I'll mount the casters so I can move it around in the shop. Then it'll be time to start working on the upper structure - the lift assembly, the cooking grate, etc.

So far, so good! I hope to have one more update before Christmas, but we'll see how it goes. May depend on whether I make it to the welding supply store tomorrow or not. One drawback is, I live in the country, near a one-horse town (or one stop light lol). Everything I need to work on fabrication projects - steel, welding supplies, etc. are at least 1.5-2 hours round trip. So we'll see how soon I get over there.

PS I drive and hour 10 to get supplies because they are almost 1/2 price of the local place that isn't open on Saturdays or lunch and won't take material orders after 4....

Ha! Yep...can't say that's never happened lol!

Try as I might to think of everything, and always make a careful list, I'll invariably forget something. When I start a new build, one thing I know for sure is I'll have to go to the steel yard at least a couple times. Since it's about 45 miles to the nearest steel yard, that's basically a half day there and back pulling my trailer. About the same distance to my welding supply store...but the only thing I buy there is shielding gas - so no worries about forgetting something.

Yep! There are a couple other steel suppliers that are about the same distance from me, but both more expensive...and wouldn't really save any drive time anyway.
