Location
South Louisiana-Yes, it is HOT
Been a while since I have made these. I went fishing and the conditions were right. Falling tide after a period of slack tide so the fish were feeding. But with a WNW wind overnight, the wind blew the tide out farther than I expected. I only had a few hours to fish the flat before I lost too much water to float the boat. I made the best of it. Caught 4 redfish, could only keep one that was in the slot. Also caught a 20-22" black drum on a topwater.. only the second black drum I have ever caught on topwater. So with a keeper 24.5" redfish, and the black drum, plenty enough meat for crab cakes.

First fish of the morning-27" redfish...

Second fish of the morning....20-22" black drum...

Did not take picks of the 3rd and 4th fish of the morning. a keeper 24.5" redfish and an undersized 16" redfish. The tide forced me to move, so I went to a low tide spot and soaked shrimp under a cork while I ate lunch. I caught catfish every cast. Kept most of those hardheads for garden fertilizer. Then I saw a big redfish cruise around the point. picked up my topwater bait and timed my delivery. He crushed it as I pulled the bait just in front of him...after a good fight, 30" redfish...

Been a long while since I have caught one that big on topwater. Always fun! Then the afternoon storms started building so I called the trip just after 1pm. Tide would stop at 3pm anyway so the fishing was about done for the day. Time to head home....

So good. The crab was super fresh with no fishy smell at all. Great meal! Served with a side salad and a nice French Sauvignon Blanc White wine.

That looks amazing Mr. Swamp!

Any chance you would share your recipe for the crab cakes?

Looks like a really productive day on the water and a nice finish on those crab cakes! Thank you for the link to the recipe too!

Food looks fantastic Keith, but even without it, that's my kind of day. I love fishing for spottails even if the slot here is so restrictive...

I want to be your next door neighbor!

Love me some good crab cakes! Those look cooked to perfection. I never though of mixing fish and crab, though. I have some pike in the freezer I've been think about having the wife make some non-crab crab cakes with. White flakey meat that should work. She makes really good crab cakes! Guess I have to be nice to her so she will give them a shot.

I do that all the time with fish...no crab crab cakes, AKA fish patties...
