Greetings to All!

Well, it's been a couple of long months here. Been working lots of overtime and rarely got time to enjoy this great obsession and the site. My busy season is over now, and I'm still on overtime (just not as much). The weather reports all week had us getting from a dusting of snow to 1-3 inches, so I thought I would be able to get something done in between. I even took Friday off to get things ready.

All was set to do a couple turkey breasts and some ABTs today. When I went to bed last night, it hadn't started to snow and I figured it would be OK. I woke up this morning to nine inches of wet, heavy, sloppy (yet really beautiful white) snow. It was still snowing and another inch came down as my heart sank. Grabbed the shovel and started digging out. Needless to say, I didn't get to do any smoking.

All was not lost, though. I decided to slice some of the turkey breast and made some turkey a la Mexicana. It wasn't smoked, but now that I think about it, I just might try that next time. I had lightly dusted the turkey with Jeff's rub and the flavor was incredible.

All in all, I used about 1/2 lb of turkey breast, half a medium onion, half a tomato and two jalepenos, sliced, seeds and ribs left in. I love the heat, but it wasn't as hot as I had really expected. It made two light meals which was perfect.

Anyway, it's great to be back and I'm looking forward to being active on the site again. Well, until next harvest, anyway.

Jerry, lets see some cold cold cold smoking, heck I'd smoke over an ice hole if need be. Did I just say that?

We're at the mercy of the weather a lot in my neck of the woods, unfortunately mostly just rain and never enough snow in the lowlands, for my taste.  I've been skunked out of a few smokes lately. Glad you made the best of it!

Rain or snow has never stopped me.  I have a plastic tarp canopy and wind breaks over and around my otherwise fully exposed smoking area.  I even have to support the aluminum canopy frame with 2x4's to help with the snow loads in the winter.  "Never enough snow in the lowlands?"  Be careful what you wish for this winter.  It's suppose to be real bad this time around.  I haven't seen any woolie bears to check out the length of the fibers yet.  Might have to get some 4x4's this year. I keep thinking about building something like a pergola with walls and top cover, but the City Building Department is very sticky about details and very very slow in the permit process.  Oh, did I happen to mention they're also very greedy on fees?  That's money that could be spent on a cut of meat.  I know where my priorities are.

Yeah, we can rig a tarp over the deck, but sometimes that just wasn't gonna do it.  I know, Dave, most of us western washington types are snow-phobes, but I'm not one of em!

We'll see what La Nina brings - ya never know around here.  Gonna make a better set-up for smoking in the weather real soon, still working on it though. I'm doing abt's and meatballs  this morning in the drizzle
It's like we always say, if you wait for good weather, you'll never do anything around here!
