Up until Sunday morning, I was sharing spice space with my bride. I was all ready to go with what I was calling 'Firsts' (am working on that post now) and I had to make an unscheduled trip to the market for a couple of ingredients that I thought I had.

Lesson learned? Get some sort of storage box for smoking ingredients only. I searched the forum for a basic list of supplies including spices, etc. but couldn't find one.

I thought I'd touch base with the brain trust and see what the BBQ'er keeps in her/his pantry. Feel free to chime in.

Nowhere near all inclusive, but for me I got to have

Kosher Salt
Black Pepper
Granulated garlic

Those three go along ways for me.

After that

Paprika
Cayenne Pepper
Chili Powder
Brown Sugar (I know it isn't a spice)
Cinamon
Onion Powder
Cumin

Just off the top of my head........have fun filling the cabinet no matter what you grab

My wife was kind enough to give me my cabinet for smoking spices. Then she has a cabinet for her baking spices. The smoking one is pretty much everything she doesnt need from baking.

I keep the following in there:

Garlic, season salt, Salt, peppercorns, pepper's, onion powder, paprika, steak seasoning.

Then I have a grinder and scale in there too. Also have sausage seasonings and casings in there too.

I built what I call a spice rack on steroids, and I wheel it in and out of the closet in my office. I always know where my stuff is, and I don't worry about not being notified when we are running out of a spice. Now Gloria has her kitchen pantry, and that holds all her spices and seasonings. It works for us because she cooks in the kitchen, and I cook/smoke/grill outdoors. My office has a sliding glass door that opens to the patio. I know you'll work something out, separating your's and her's might help, even when it's within the same pantry.
My essentials are;
kosher salt
smoked salt
peppercorns
Mexican oregano
corriander seeds
cumin
celery seeds
granulated garlic
onion powder
Ancho chile powder
Chimayo chile powder
Jalapeno chipotle powder
Spanish paprika
Hungarian paprika
Red chile flakes

There is more, but it would be TMI.

Pretty much just listed mine but I do add fresh smashed garlic cloves to some of my rubs ( not all )

I am also lucky like brian and have a wife that gives me my space for the spices and she doesn't ever try to move me out cacause she likes it as much as I do.
Now from right off the top of my head:
garlic powder
salt and peppercorn
cumin paprika (spanish & hungerian)
Cajun spices (zaterrans/ tony cachers)
chili powder
cayenne
jamacian jerk seasons (ocho rios brand)
onion powder
mushard power
Basil powder
tyme powder
Sausage seasonings:fennel seed, crushed red pepper, coriander, all spice, sugars
Now thats some of the spices that I use alot that I can remember.

You've described a plain and simple way to keep things organized.

I keep my spice's in spaghetti jars. This will include basil, oregano, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, sage, cayenne, chile arbol, smoked salt, kosher salt..etc. etc. works good for me.
