The 2010 Northwest BBQ Championship was my first BBQ competition that I actually got to participate in on a real team. This was a KCBS certified event and qualifier for nationals. The competition was very tough. Tasted some really good BBQ and some really bad BBQ. In true Pacific Northwest style it rained (with thunder & lightning) all the through until the awards presentation. Met some really cool people that loved to talk BBQ and their particular style. Others were... less than tolerable.

It was clearly laid out from the beginning that this is by KCBS rules and criteria. Evidently this raised some hackles. What is the difference between KCBS and PNWBA judging criteria?

Met one person that was a representative of the PNWBA. He crept up behind me & the pitmaster while we were tending meat in the smoker spouting off something about freedom of the press and started snapping pictures of the inside of boss' smoker. After having been up most of the night I fought the urge to skewer him. What is the deal with the PNWBA? I found that some teams love them and many will not have anything to do with them.

Thanks

There are some good people in the organization, but I have heard that some of the organizers can be kinda "quirky". My boss helped out on a team that competed at the state fair. The event was organized by some gal and apperantly it was a complete cluster...... spaces were not marked so some people were taking up more than one space, no place to dump ash had been organized, and many many other issues.

I understand overall they are a good organization, but this is all from talking to my boss, so I can't say for sure.
