I got the Sportsman 1100 & I found in my area/temps. P5 setting is the highest I will go on my grill/smoker to maintain my temp set point.
At a P5 setting & controller set to my desired temp it will maintains the temp I set at the controller.
I always start my grill on a P4 which is the default setting from the factory. Then once grill is going good I will then set my P5 setting & then the desired temp I want.
I have PB600 and, according to manual, there are a few things one must do to ensure these pellet grills perform properly:
1. Remove ash from the burn cup before each use and ensure the blower tube outlet is unobstructed.
2. Press and hold the Prime button for about 30 seconds and listen to hear the pellets dropping into the burn cup. If no sound is heard, there's either a layer of ash in the cup or the auger is jammed up and not feeding the pellets in.
3. The grill must always be started on the Smoke setting, Prime, then wait for white smoke to appear and clear before changing to a temp setting. Note that the P setting can only be set while on the Smoke setting. With mine I have found P5 to typically maintain temp once reached for 300 and below, with P4 more appropriate for 350 and above.
Good Luck and Happy Smokin!
I think my owners manual warned you could have flame outs on some P settings, reckon pellets temps ect play a roll, played with the settings when I first got mine but was happy with normal setting and a pellet tube for added smoke.
