pine wood for strting fire

When smoking meat, They say you should not use pine wood.but  Can you use scraps of wood 2x4 or plywood to get the fire started. In a fire pit we used scraps of wood for kindling wood and put the logs on top. Since you are not cooking the meat, I didn't know if it would be ok.

Pine is fine for starting fires.

doda, afternoon.....  Skip the pine... Skip the plywood.... Use a weed burner and put in wood that is safe to use for Q....  After the smoking session, for the after party, burn all the scrap wood for ambiance....   Dave

I would be concerned with what else comes with the plywood and 2x4's. What chemicals might they contain?

I would use the scraps for a bon fire....

When I was a kid we would use the core of the pine trees for fire starter sticks. It was so loaded with sap that a match would be all you needed.

I wouldn't worry about the 2X4's , but I'd definitely skip the plywood.
