Pine Rosin removal

Help! We loaned out our smoker.  After cooking they decided to use it for warmth and built a large fire in the fire box.  Not knowing what wood they were using (or not caring) they burnt several large pieces of rich-lighter-pine knots.  Now our smoker reeks of pine and we don't have a clue on how to clean it out!

Probably your best bet is to burn some hot fires in it using whatever wood you normally use. May take multiple times.

Use a hot and smokey hickory or mesquite fire to hide the smell.  Like Dirtsailor said, may take a few...  

Is there a build up of creosote from the pine?  Is the borrower gonna split the wood for you?

I would burn a couple of hot fires in it then hauj it to a car wash and  high pressure soap and rinse a few times . Then build a fire w/ the proper wood and re season it.
