Yesterday a friend and I grilled in a park picnic area. The charcoal was glowing, the chorizo was hot, and the evening air was so still that the smoke went almost perfectly straight up. In the quiet, we could hear an occasional rattle and whap in the leaves. We were surrounded by hickory trees and they were dropping nuts the same way that black walnuts do. The ground was littered with the split husks which resembled slices of avocado.

The nuts themselves were scattered around and I was tempted to get on all fours and gather some to try to grow them. Probably against park rules.

My GF has several Pecan trees in her yard and a swing tied to one.  We are occasionally pelted by falling pecans while sitting in the swing.

We harvest the nuts.  Bumper crop years can be very impressive with the ground literally covered in nuts.

For sure!  I used to live in south Florida and have witnessed falling coconuts.  Hard hat area.

Girlfriend and I do indeed harvest, pecans, (and use them in recipes),  every year.  Free food.

Hey Guys, I grew up in Northern VA and we had 100 foot hickory trees on the property. We would collect them ad pick the meat out of them. It was quite the job. A few hours of cracking those hard little suckers and picking the meat out with tools a dentist would use. We have a big bowl of , what looked like crushed nuts and my dad would bake sweet breads and stuff with them. It was great. He was such a cook. He use anything and make wonderful stuff. Had a hard pear tree, couldn't really eat them, too hard. We threw them at each other. But he'd make preserves out of them and can them. We ate them out of the jar and on ice cream, tasty. Thanks for the trip down memory lane... Kevin
