Wife's cousin gave me a very large pecan tree,this thing is a good 40 inches at the base.The limbs that split off it are from 18 to 22 inches in diameter.I only cut one 20 inch limb off so far because the rest of the tree will fall on some of his crops.I cut this up to length and carried it home.Now I'm an old country boy and have split oak wood all my life by hand.Well I set a big old piece up on my splitting block and took a good swing with my splitting maul..Bam! nothing happened.I could hardly make the maul stick.This stuff is worse than sweet gum to split.I'm having to split a 3 or 4 inch thick piece off the side to get it split up.This is going to take a while.When I cut the rest of the tree down ,I'll rent a log splitter.But for now this old man will get a work out. When I finish I'll have enough pecan wood for the rest of my life time.But it will all be worth it when I start using it.I can taste that chicken now.
 
Not a wood splitting guy at all so this may be a really stupid question is it green and will it split better when it dries a little? The apple wood I have gotten seems to be a little easier to work with once it dries is the reason I am asking.
 
Yep it's green.I've never had a problem splitting green wood before.Besides, it dries out better split. Thanks for the input.

do you have any idea what its worth as lumber ? you might want to reconsider butchering it and sell it for the lumber !!!
 
I'm going to split up about a face cord to start getting it seasoned out.Then it will be a log splitter for the rest of the tree after my cousin get his crop in. As far as using it for lumber,the main trunk is hollowed out and big limbs are crooked as a used car salesman.So it would be about useless for lumber or vernier .And Old Dog ,I guess I'll have to leave what's left after I die to you in my will.Pecan wood is real hard to find around here.What I've found is around $ 60/70 for a half a face cord split.We got plenty  oak and hickory.I should have all the pecan wood I'll ever need when I finish.
 
Wish I could find some. just used up my last of the pecan...... I'm on the look out though...

Pecan and hickory are from the same family. They are very hard woods and don't split easily by wedge and sledge. I can't say for pecan but hickory is separated by riving. It sounds like that's what you have been doing with the pecan. I agree that a splitter is the way to go.
 
I bought 3 tons of Pecan the other day. Most of it is branches so not much needs splitting so I just cut it up into short lengths with the chainsaw.

If you are having trouble splitting it, just cut the trunk lengths short.

I find it burns super fast and I need to mix it with Que Bracho (Axe breaker in Spanish, a very hard wood here in Argentina).

It is easy to go from a small fire to hot black smoke when burning small branches.

Seems to taste fine, but have only cooked with it twice.
