I'm not sure on family as in kids' friendly activities. It was just my wife and I when we stayed there.

My wife loved the shopping area just east of the PCB Pier. We ate at a few of the local places and it was good.

If you like military stuff, there is a couple of choices:
The Naval Air Museum at Pensacola NAS. I'm not sure if you still need to apply ahead of time for gate passes. When we were in the area, it was on lock-down.
There is also an Air Force Armament Museum just outside of Eglin AFB NE of Fort Walton Beach
It was open and I loved it.

walk out on the fishing pier late at night. you mite get to see a shark pulled in! those guys catch some big and interesting stuff sometimes! ive seen huge redfish octopus and sharks pulled out of there.

the walk out and back in the salty night air will do wonders for ya too.

sorry too long ago to recommend food joints. go hit up the fishing boats for some good stuff to grill cook!

get out on a boat and see the dead lakes area if you like nature. it doesnt get any more "outback" than that there!

Was there in May. Enjoyed Shuckems Oyster Bar (tourist trap?). Dee's Hangout was very good. Also ate at Schooners. Another trap, but PCB itself is a tourist trap so there is that. Regardless, all the seafood I got was great. Have fun.

If you like fishing, book a 4 hour early in-shore fishing trip. RadioGal and I just had a morning in-shore trip on the east coast, Shallotte NC. We caught a few fish no real keepers but such an enjoyable morning among the ICW and salt marshes. Take a walk on on of the local fishing piers, people watch. We talked with a local who was using a cast net for bait, interesting.

Go down on the shore, look for seafood markets just some interesting stuff to see and experience.
Many seafood restaurants will prepare your fresh caught fish. Find a place that operates their own boat or fleet, good deals on seafood. We just had a wonderful snow crab dinner at Crab Catchers, in Little River SC. Buy 2 pounds, get one free!. Most of these seaside places provide generous portions.

Man in the Sea is OK but a pass in my book for younger kids, but I may be wrong.

ANY place that offers snow crab outside Alaska is a waste of your money in my opinion.
Find local crab which is blue in the gulf. Local shrimp is also killer.
