I know some get the smoker going then take a nap personally if the smoker is running I'm awake and checking on it regularly

That really depends on your familiarity with you smoker and the conditions in which you smoke.

I'm hoping to use my 2 new maverick et-73s to wake me up on Friday when I do 33lbs of pork butt on the WSMs.

The first 4 or 5 times I did overnight, I was up most of the night.

If you are using a gasser or your rig is on your deck or really close to the house (less than 10' from any flammable material), you need to be awake the whole time for safety's sake.

Part of the reason we smoke overnight is because the meat needs that long, but the other reason is we love being up with the smoker...especially if you can get some hard core friends to come over, share some booze and cigars...that's a good time.

When I pull an all nighter, I usually rook- I mean I usually recruit one of my boys to stay up with me. We'll talk, play cards, watch a little tv. If I take a nap, the lad will play his video games with his headphones on.  I discovered recently that those "gravity chairs" are really comfy.
