A few months ago right after joining SMF I was at Walley World looking for a new meat thermometer. I had really considered the Maverick but was unsure at that stage. Anyway I saw this Acu-rite for $16 and said what the heck, not much to lose. Well I was quite impressed with it's accuracy in boiling water and comparing it using ambient house temperature against an expensive mercurial thermometer.
While it is NOT wireless, it has a loud beeping alarm. Since I don't have any of the fancy smokers or grills my grill/smoker does need me to keep a frequent eye on it at lower temperature cooking especially since I burn charcoal. So I am outside much of the cook time anyway.
I was quite impressed with the one Acu-rite so I bought another to have one for IT for the grill and one for the meat. I have dropped both of them on the pavement more than once and they still work. They have a fairly good magnet on the back for mounting. Powered by two AA batts, not incl. Flip a switch by the batts and you have Celsius readings.
If you're on a budget, don't mind non wireless, might want to try one or two of these, they are pretty good, so far.
