with seeing some smoke pits made from old oil tanks would it be ok to use a diesel fuel 55 gallon drum after a good burn?

short answer...yes

Mine was a zep drum, that then was used for diesel.

A 3 pallet burn and pressure wash later, I was good to go

At least a couple good hot burns, soapy power wash an fer good measures a run with a wire wheel then another good soapy wash should do the trick.

Many a pig cooker been made from fuel oil barrels. Just be real carefull with the first fire, although diesel ain't near as explosive as gas er some other things, ya just don't wan't a surprise. Eyebrows er hard ta grow back without alotta explanations! Ya could actually power wash it first then start yer burns.

As they mentioned above you can use those style barrels if need be but if you have a food grade one available I would take that first. If thats all you have is a diesel fuel drum then by all means use that there is just a little more prep work to make it safe to use.
