I had the revesrse flow model of the same. I don't think the plate would provide sufficient heat to cook on, though it certanily gets hot. I have no temp measurements to vouch for this. I typically kept a couple splits up there to make sure they were completely dry before adding to the firebox.I bought a used OKJ smoker but have not had a chance to use it yet. I am wondering, what is the purpose of the horizontal plate on top of the fire box lid? Would this get hot enough while I am smoking to cook on (say simmer a side dish)?View attachment 706204
Maybe, but stack your splits on it to dry out before adding them to the fire. Wood absorbs moisture from the humidity in the air. Putting them on top of the firebox before adding them to the fire is why I think OKJ put the shelf there.I am wondering, what is the purpose of the horizontal plate on top of the fire box lid?
