I'm looking at getting an Oklahoma Joe highland. I'm new to smoking meat and fish, but I want to get more into it. I understand it is a smoker but I was wondering could you also use this as just a charcoal grill? So can you put just charcoal in the main cooking area? Or is the only purpose of this for smoking? If not what is a good entry level choice for smoking and using it as a conventional charcoal grill?

yes you can use it as a grill as well by building your fire in the main cooking area. I have a Longhorn, and do it all the time.

A Weber kettle can be used for both easily also and it's reasonable cheap to purchase.

I would NEVER put charcoal or wood in my main food chamber because if you don’t get all that ash out, you are asking for rust. Might be just me.

I agree. While you can use the main chamber as a grill, you have to be diligent about cleaning it. You can use the firebox as a grill if you're not cooking a large amount.
