Okla Joe highlander, how important is the smoke stack dryer vent mod?

I will be having a sliding grate installed and was thinking of maybe putting a small second sliding grate in but that would require removing the dryer vent.

Now, I would guess the Okla joe folks designed this smoker to work with the stack where it is.
Any of you using the smoker without the mod in and letting the smoke flow the way okla joe designed it?
 
Got a better thing to use. a bread pan. Got that from member tallbm. Works real well. Depending on the height of the pan. Mine sits only 4 inches out and you can cut the bread pan down in size. I have mine cut so it sits about 1/8 from the grate. Easy to work around. Now this is assuming that your talking about inside of the cooking chamber that is.

Im talking about connecting an elbow pipe to the smoke stack to bring the opening down to the grate level.
