A few years back when Bernzomatic started selling the outdoor torch, (AKA the Okie Fire Stick, thanks TX Sandman) at the big home improvent stores I figured I could make one for less than they were selling them for. I went home and looked for something I could scaveng to make a charcoal lighter for my Poor Mans Performer.
This is the first one, I used it for about 2 1/2 years before I decided to modify it. The flame spreader was flatened to get it to burn without blowing itself out.
I modifyed it, today, by cuting off the flatened end and adding a cap with holes drilled in it. I started with 4 holes and drilled more holes untill the air / fuel mixture was right. It also needs to have some back pressure or it will blow itself out, by allowing the gas to burn to quickly and leting the flame, sort of, jump off the end of the torch.
The flame isent very big but its fairly hot. I can prolly make it bigger by drilling a couple of holes in the copper pipe near the bottom, and letting in more make up air.
I use this thing to light fires everywhere, on burn piles, the wood stove in the house, the back yard BBQ, UDS, poor mans performer, yada yada yada. One is not enough, I often run around looking for it so I can start a fire someplace else. So I made up another one. For this I used a regulator off an old Mr.Heater, it uses more fuel and has a much larger flame than the other one.
The flame spreader on this one is countersunk so the wind cant blow it out. I flared a 1/2" pipe and inserted a 3/8" cap upsde down to countersink it. I can get better pictures if anyone needs to see any thing better.
Here it is acting like its fireing up the Poor Mans Perfomer. Thats not the fire grate thats usually in there I had that rusty thing in for an experiment I was working on earlyer.
