MES is doable but I suggest a good thermometer and I recommend a remote probe type. I also would suggest an AMNPS unless you really enjoy feeding chips every 30-45m.
Sounds like you are already familiar with AMNPS. It was designed for a GEN1 smoker with room to sit near bottom. Looks like your smoker has a water pan there and a little different than I've seen. BTW Pretty much no one uses water in there smoker... I call mine a drip tray.
