to smoking.  But with all the folks on here with so much knowledge on different things, I have a question

My son was driving me home and ran over a curb (don"t ask).  I had him pull over and I got it and the only thing I saw was a nice chunk out of my wheel.  Lovely.

But when we got him (less than 2 miles) I looked again and there is a knot on the tire. 

Safe/unsafe?  Repairable or strictly need to be replaced.

My husband is gonna be slightly irritated when he comes home so I just need to know ahead of time what I'm looking at.

I had one of them back in the 70s. That was back before radials though. I felt it bumping on the way home from work, so I pulled over, put the spare on, and put that tire in the trunk. At this point, I was about 8 miles from home. As I was driving in my driveway, the tire blew in my trunk!  Sounded like a shotgun went off in my trunk! I think mine was a delaminating retread though.

That story probably doesn't help you any, but there are a lot of guys here who know a lot more about a thing like that than I do. I would think "Replaced", and stay away from it in the meantime. A tire is to important to take a chance on.

unsafe,  if there is a chunk out the the rim also unsafe,  find a used tire place and get new one,  call a junk yard and get a new rim,  have them match your car, get it cheap

I also agree with Bear on this one and you need to change that tire. Then beat the child into submission for screwing up his driving privilege and make him walk until he can pay for the tire. Now I was only kidding about beating the poor boy but I would make him to earn the money for the tire repair.

He will definitely be paying.  Mowing all those yards every week he should have it paid for in no time.  I won't share with y'all if I beat him or not!!!  Maybe I'll just eat some nicely smoked meat in front of him and not share.

Sounds like a broken belt in the tire, toss it. I had that happen to me once.

take it easy on the boy,  theres a lot worse things he could do, dont sweat the little things and he'll think harder about the big things and make the right choices,  (hopefully)

Tire needs replaced as does the rim. The tire tire isn't really safe to drive on and no tire can't be balanced on that rim if theres a big chunk out of it even if the tire does seal on the rim

I gotta agree with the tire and wheel needing replaced. I also agree on the go easy on him LOL see I can laugh since my daughter rolled my little blazer from a driving stance all the way around and back to sitting on the wheels. She was fine, a little shook up but fine, and didn't even spill her coke. Then she calls and ask me how I want her to pay for it. I had to remind her she is my daughter and stuff happens. Her getting her first year nursing degree was good enough for me.

A tire, wheel, fender, hood and such can be easily replaced. Sure it may cost but can be replaced. I used to be pretty high strung when it came to things like this. But late last year same daughter spent the night in the trauma center after a bad wreck. You can't even imagine the thoughts that go thru you head while you are driving the hour it takes to get to the hospital.

Sorry to sound like a preacher, but I have learned alot in the last few years.

Thanks for the input Tom.  He really is an amazing kid.  In fact, just over the past weekend he finished working on his truck that we gave him when he turned 16.  That boy replaced all 8 rod bearings by himself (guidance from dad).  And many other things he has done to that truck.  In fact, his friends now call him for advice on their vehicles.  This was really just a small mistake when you read daily about the things kids do today,  I really am blessed.

So I really have no complaints and I'm really not even mad.

You're right, I've finally got mine to 31 and 35 but what a road!  Don't sweat the small stuff.  Just remind him with every priviledge comes a responsibility.  Lots you can teach but there are things only he can learn, too.

Sound like you and Mr B have done a fine job, its really good to hear he is willing to do the work himself and not want someone to hand it to him.

LOL sorry but I gotta laugh thinking about all the shows on tv where cars run over all sorts of stuff and just keep on going. Not even a scratch, thats how my step daughter thinks it should be.

I don't like your idea at all about eating smoked meat in front of him.

If I was your son, I'd say "Please beat me---Don't eat smoked meat in front of me, unless I can have some!!!"

I agree with what everyone else has stated...one thing to keep an eye on is the vehicles alignment if it was a front tire.  If it hit hard enough to knock a chunk out of the wheel and put a knot on the tire, it very easily could have knocked the alignment out of whack or damage some suspension parts on the front end.

at that age you'll get more mileage out of telling his three best buddies about it than you will busting him down, they will "punish" him far more than you ever could IMO
