I'm on a fishing discussion board although I don't fish - I run a watershed group. That board differs from this one in a very important way. They have big problems with lots of lurkers who are just looking for good fishing spots. The problem is, that's a limited resource - only so many streams - so when a few dozen or hundred guys swoop in on a "honey hole" it gets fished out and ruined, not to mention litter. So they jealously guard their secret spots, and scold anyone who reveals a location. They'll share tips on fishing methods and equipment, and types of locations, and overall it's a friendly board. Just don't say where you were fishing.
SMF on the other hand doesn't have that problem. If I post pics of my smoker I won't get a hundred guys on my patio the next day, burning my wood. Here we also share tips and advice but we don't need to guard a limited resource. It allows a more relaxed atmosphere.
