I guess I am a Newbie, how do you include photos with a post

You use the Upload a File next to the Post Reply button.
That opens a window where you select the file you want to post, from your computer of storage device.
SMF.com will upload the file (as long as it isn't too huge).
Then you can choose to display a thumbnail, or a full image.

I use a thumbnail. It can be clicked on and it pops open to a full size image. But to those on slower Internet connections a thumbnail is more download friendly. Then they aren't sitting while some burgeoning picture file downloads, and they can choose to open, or not.
