Hey folks, I found your site today and have been smoking my brain with info for hours!

I don't have a smoker, but am interested in getting one.  I've only been researching smokers for a few days, but the most important thing that I've learned so far is that I need to up my budget.  I was hoping to get started for under $500, but it looks like I won't get an effective smoker that will last for that much.

I'm looking for a family sized offset side firebox smoker that I can use charcoal and / or wood in.

I'm in Huntsville, AL, and, believe it or not, BBQ around here sucks.  The locally owned BBQ chain has the market pretty much cornered, but their meat is rancid compared to BBQ that I've had elsewhere.  The only solution is to make my own!

If anyone has any suggestions for small time smokers, I'd love to hear them.

check out Craig's list...if you have cash in hand and patient you can find a good offset on there.  The thicker the steel the better...they hold temps better.  Weber smoky mountains make good q and lots of foke like the Ugly drum smoker.  First thing to learn will be fire control...not too hot or cold and getting the right kind of smoke.

Hey Kathryn!  Good to hear from someone in my area.  I saw your thread about looking for a new smoker.  I was going to ask you about local sources for smoking hardware, but I see that there really aren't any.  :\

I'm looking forward to pics of your new one arriving today!

I cant wait!!!!  The UPS guy isn't here yet.  Glad it's going to be here on my day off.  Tapping the toes and waiting for that and a plumber to bring a new water heater.  Sigh...it's only money.  LOL
