New Smoker Owner

I have a new smoker and wanted to add counter weights first.  I then wanted to get the rust and old paint off of it and the trailer.  

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  to the SMF ! I would be guessing that your Aviator pic is your new smoker? 

IMO, the right way would be to sandblast the whole works and then start over with good primer and paint, and use high temp paint where needed? 

Depending on your budget? I like Rustoleum Primer and Paint for these and other similar outdoor projects that are subject to sitting in the elements. You can also add a Valspar hardener to the Rustoleum paint to give it an even harder protected finish. The best part I like is, it's very easy to touch up the little dings as they pop up over time.

Counterweights are easy to figure out, if you could post up a few pics and explain a little more about what you are wanting to do?

There is a lot of Great information on this SMF and a bunch of Awesome Members who can help you and or point you in the right direction. Keep use posted on your progress and remember, we like lots of pix!

Do you know of a particular sandblaster to use for this type of thing?

When you talk about Rustoleum are you talking about the spray paint?

I'll post a bunch of pictures this weekend when I work on it.

Hello, as far as a sand blaster? I would find someone who is already set up for Blasting this type size project you have. You will not be happy with the job a smaller cheaper blaster will do for you. It takes a lot of CFM to run a good blaster. They maybe able to prime it right after for you as well to keep the raw metal from surface rusting right away on you. It doesn't take much moisture in the air for this to start to happen.  

Depending on how badly you think it may need blasing? You could also wire wheel over the bad spots with a good stainless steel 4" wire wheel. That's the nice thing about Rustoleum primer, it's designed to etch to lightly rusted metal as long as it's free of rust scale, dirt and or grease. Then you can go over it with the Rustoleum paint.

Over the years with all my welding projects, I find this to be a nice economical approach to these type projects. A car, truck, Motorcycle, that's another story. I usually like to buy quarts or gallons of Rustoleum and spray it myself, a rattle can or small brush works nice for touch-ups. A lot depends on your resources as to what you can and can not afford to do? I am sure your smoker will still get the job done nicely repainted or not?  Hope that all helps? Mike
