Hello all. I have been recently going through the site and doing research on smokers for a few months now. I'm busy on a regular grill but wanted to try a smoker. Well I'm new here and finally purchased my 1st smoker! My problem is it's waaaaay too big. I had no idea what I was getting into when I made the deal. Not sure about the rules here with pics but I have a stock photo of what it looks like. By the time I finished loading it I was beat and it was dark. Mine doesn't have a brand name that I can see but it looks like the stock photo I am posting. I will take pics tomorrow during the day and post those. Btw I honestly had no idea it was going to be as big as it was. It was hand built in Texas and the previous owner had it shipped to him. Anyway I appreciate any help along the way! It looks a lot like the pic here.

That is a Killer Smoker. Keep the torch away!!!!!! I agree with everyone who says the vertical smoking chamber will soon be your favorite part. I'd be hanging sausage in that baby!!!!!!

Well I had a chance to clean out the Train aka Old Glory today. Underneath that foil was about an hours worth of scraping and pressure washing sludge and rust out. Lawd what a mess. The firebox had a lot of rust. This thing was definitely never covered. Going to be fun ordering a legit cover. Oh and one thing about cylinder shaped areas with a pressure washers, that crap does a U-turn and ends up right in your face . I got most of it out and most of it on me. Turned the leaf blower on it after and dried it all. No time to season today. We have warm weather this week so it should be ok for a few days. Since most like pics. Here is a few.

Those chamber grates were a tough clean. I gave up after a while. Got that coal grate from my uncle. He got it from the oil fields. No clue what it went to but it's thick steel.

My uncle also gave me this. He said it came from a hopper or shaker or something like that they used for mud. Then someone made an adjustable bbq grill out of it. I was going to cut it up for a firebox grate but probably best to keep it together. Maybe that will be a different thread

Yeah this damn handle is supposed to be 1/2" inner diameter but it's a hair over 3/8". Handle rod is right at 1/2". Only option I had for a handle. This was an event. My hands are dead. I'm done.

Mud is a liquid with high viscosity, its water and barite and maybe some other stuff I've forgotten, that is circulated down the inside of drill pipe. It " jets " out the drill bit and comes back up to the surface on the outside of the drill pipe.

It serves multiple purposes but in this case it brings the " cuttings " from the rock to the surface, then its run through the shale shaker. The cuttings are collected on the grate your uncle gave you.

The cuttings are important for the geologist, who comes around occasionally and examines them to determine the type of rock.

It also keeps the cutting from circulating back through the pumps and then back down the drill pipe.

Makes sense. The shaker piece came from good ol Bakersfield CA. Along with some core samples and a massive drill bit. Took 3 guys to load that bit. The piece from the shaker was in a rock and cement bbq setup. The metal on the shaker is pretty thick. I can see why now. Thanks for the info!

I had a lot of family that were roughnecks. They worked in the fields before that. Most of them came from Mckey, Vian and Tahlequah Oklahoma. Both sides ended in up in Bakersfield lol. We had a saying in Bakersfield. Oklahoma took over Bakersfield and never fired a shot lol.

When I finished I was covered in a mess. I started putting everything away and realized that same mess had gotten all over the side of my garage wall behind me. That's when the second cleanup started lol.

Got it covered in oil and getting it seasoned. 85* outside today. Feels like 100 Not sure how accurate the thermos are. So far it's been burning for roughly 30min.
