Hey team. Just got a WSM 18" for my 40th Birthday. A lot of things I google bring me links to this page, so I figured I'd might as well join and say hi. And as you can see, I am currently in Quarantine mode - so a lot of time on my hand to learn the new hobby!

Welcome to the forum as well as the "Stay at Home Club"!
Hopefully you can get out to find some meat and fuel...

Welcome from Iowa! You've come to a great place

Ryan

Thanks guys! Just came back from HD with some Royal Oak lump and a bag of Kingsford Cherry Chunks and some Weber Pecan Chunks. I feel it will be hard to not come out of places like that without stuff for the smoker moving forward...

Welcome from UT. A WSM is a great unit and you will learn a lot. Lots of fun mods you can do to them too!

Steve, congrats on the new smoker. You'll love it. With lump, you'll be looking at slightly higher smoker temps. Not a problem at all.

Enjoy the passion!

Ray
Oh let the lessons start! And that is what I have learned, still very new but yes, seeing these lump charcoals do burn hotter. Not exactly meaning they burn "longer" per se from what I've read...

Good lump, which RO is, burns cleaner due to greater surface area exposed to available air. 275F+ chamber temp is normal.

Briquettes pack together more tightly and can burn better at lower temps. Dense briquettes (RO Ridge/HD Embers/Expert Grill/Lowes Ridge/Weber/B&B) burn longer than lighter briqs.
