Hey everyone!

I am a bbq newbie who dabbled with a Masterbuilt 44 electric for a season until the controls were ruined by snow melting and leaking water into the control board. I threw it out and didn't have another smoker for a couple years. I just got a Broil King Smoke natural gas smoker and hooked it up to my house gas line. I did a few test runs last night and pulled about half of my hair out trying to get it to smoke. I eventually got it sorted enough to smoke some spare ribs today, but do have a lot of questions about how to improve the smoking capabilities of the smoker. I have read around 13-15 pages of the propane subforums, but haven't seen much except for questions about converting from propane to natural gas. Should I ask my questions there?

Now for the qview of my first Broil King smoke (and the smoker):

Can’t help you with the propane question but the cook looks like it turned out awesome. Did it pass the taste test.

Yep, it was good. Fat rendered pretty well and it nice bark, but the smoke was light for my liking. I don't know if it was the smoker or meat, but I got about 1/16" of a smoke ring. I would've liked to see a lot deeper smoke penetration.

Welcome to the site and congratulations on getting back into smoking. I'm not a gasser either so I can't help much with your smoker, but I think the AMPT's will help you out with getting the smoke profile your looking for. Don't worry about the smoke ring it's not really indicative of the smokiness of the food. It's more for show. Some smokers like the electrics don't produce any smoke ring, but get a good smoke flavor.

Nice to have you here. I run a stick burner so I don’t have much to offer about gas but I will second the advice about the A-Maze-N smoking tray. I’m betting that would solve your smoke concerns. Nice cook by the way. Keep at it.
