Need Help Identifying a Traeger Pellet Smoker

Discussion in 'Pellet Smokers' started by kjoglide, Oct 6, 2013.

  1. Hey All-

Found what I think is a deal on Craigslist for a Traeger Pellet Smoker. Not sure what model it is, as it's not specified in the listing.

Seems like a good deal at $50, even though it does need the cooking grate.

Any help identifying what model it is would be appreciated.

Looking at their website and it looks like a Junior or Junior Elite, both of which sell for $399 so for $50 I think I'd have to snatch it up!
  3. Just a quick update. It is the Traeger Jr, and it sits out by the pool as I type. At $50, didn't feel right even trying to haggle. It's missing the grease bucket, and grill grate. Will have to order that up this week.

All the instructions on the smoker, and the manual I downloaded specify to use Traeger Pellets only. Being new to a pellet smoker, is that necessary, or will any quality pellet be okay?

    Thanks for the help.

  5. You can use any pellet, but quality does vary with them.  It seems most use what they have nearby.  I have not used the traeger brand, but here in Kc they are like 18 bucks.  I use bbq delight, and for cheap cooks Ozark hardwood pellets from Tractor supply.  They are for pellet stoves but are safe to use in food cookers.( I called the company)  Have heard good things about Lumber jack...I have not used them. U got a great deal for 50 bucks...

Congrats on a great deal!  That's a nice find.  Any cooking pellets are fine...Traeger insists on trying to get people to only burn their pellets, but IMO there are better-performing pellets out there.  I like B & B pellets from Academy...they perform nicely with little ash production, and they're cheaper than Traeger.

  7. What you have found is a traeger junior! And the price is a steal provided its burner/feeder are in working order. I would buy it if you didnt?
  8. I bought it, and received the missing pieces from Traeger yesterday. Looking forward to some pulled pork and ribs this weekend.
