Need advice on a custom grate

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this but I wanna build a custom rack for my small barrel smoker, I can get the material but my question is how do I season the grate so it dosnt rust? Any help would be great thanks

Rub it with oil then fire up the smoker for a good seasoning burn. Depending on use you may have to reseason from time to time.
