my large big green egg just got delivered and setup. First thing I had to adjust the lid as the back of the lid was not seated tight enough to the bottom, just loosened the nut on the top band, put pressure on the lid and tighten it back while sitting on the lid to keep it tight.

Burning it in now, I come from a MES 30 electric and an old country offset, so the kamado thing is new to me.

I did a ton of research and talked to a lot of people and decided to pony up the extra couple hundred bucks for the large BGE (looked at kamado joe and vision pro c). I'm doing my first cook tonight (grilling chops).

I can't wait to smoke a large piece on this thing without having to babysit the temps like my offset.

The temp from grate to lid is off about 25 degrees, not too big of a deal.

The thermometer is in the lid and well above grate level, so one would not expect it to read the same as one placed considerably lower.  If you have not done so, go to ceramicgrillstore.com and take a look. They manufacture a whole lot of very high quality accessories for the BGE.

I particularly like the "spider,"  which allows the placement of a size medium cast iron grid just above the burning coals in a size large BGE. We heat the BGE up to around 350°F (dome thermometer) and place steaks down on the spider-suspended grid, almost on top of the lump. This allows for great searing, after which a "Woo Ring," which is already placed in the egg, is topped with the factory cooking grid. This placement has the cooking grid some number of inches above the lump, and the steaks can be leisurely finish-roasted at a much more modest temperature. The end result is well-seared steaks, easily finished to each person's desired doneness.

Good luck with your new cooker!!

thanks for the info , one thing is for sure they make a mint off of accesorries on this thing

RogerWilco, when you say "medium cast iron grid" do you mean a medium egg size? Where did you get it? I can't tell exactly what size grid would fit in the bottom of the spider from the interweb

slimc,

Yes,  a spider that is intended to be used in a size Large BGE is designed to suspend the factory-sized cooking grid that would normally be used in a size Medium BGE. There is a necessary loss of grid diameter involved because the spider sits so low into the fire ring/box of the BGE.

The factory cast iron cooking grid, size Medium (the one required to mate with a spider intended to be paired with a size Large BGE) is 15.00 inches in diameter, with a BGE part number of "15CI." For reference, the standard cooking grid diameter for a size Large BGE is 18.250 inches.

The Ceramicgrillstore.com has some very good sections showing typical uses ans ways to set up various cooks, on their website. They are also quire helpful over the phone and they enjoy talking with newbies.

Hopefully you got to use your new Egg for some SuperBowl cooking yesterday!

Congrats on your new BGE Corey!

I have a WSM 22.5 and a LG BGE and I must say that the egg does get the most use. Although I do use my WSM in the summer, the BGE get all my winter smokes (cause I can control the heat so much easier).

Plus its great for searing and pizza!

You are gonna have so much fun!

Thanks I did finally find a 13" , which is what cermicgrillstore recommended to use with the large spider on amazon, not cheap but it was the last one so I ordered it. It seems like these things sell out quick on most websites online and are hard to find without going to a dealer.
