All 4 of my puters here at the house are networked with Ubuntu. Mint and Mandriva are also nice Linux os's.

When I worked in the computer field, the main thing about a new OS was to avoid an upgrade version. Format the drive and install the full version, it's a much cleaner install, and you don't have a layered OS. I agree it can be more costly, but then again what is your time worth? If you have an OS problem you'll have o install the old and then install the upgrade. Just a heads-up, good luck which ever way you choose.

It is the original OS shipped with the laptop. So I don't know.

I was having the same problem I think. Once I got that windows live crap off everything worked good again. Oh I'm using Vista by the way.

OpenSUSE is another great linux distribution. I have ran both OpenSUSE and Ubuntu and currently have OpenSUSE on a live boot USB drive to tinker around on. Yes openoffice (which comes with the linux distros) is nice, and free, but you must know that not all software you know and love will work. For me, itunes is the deal breaker. Yes amarok and banshee are great music applications, but synchronization with my iPhone is not possible. Linux is great, and like previously said, runs very very fast and is not as susceptible to virus attacks (because so few people use it). But have fun if something ever goes haywire. I think no matter what you're running, the key is to be very diligent in backing up files stored locally on your hard drive. A 50 dollar external hard drive has saved my bacon more than once...

I finally got rid of my my web search using adaware by lava soft. The only program that did it.

Glad to hear it Ron. I hope things run better for you now. I knew that sounded familiar. My 13 yr old had a fight with it bout a month ago. I finally joined in and got rid of it. I did it manually even goin into the register (which I do not recommend if you're not familiar with it) and editing and deleting lines.

I'm a system administrator. I've found that windows 7 works really well. The stability of a system on newer OS's really depends on how ready the hardware provider (or more specifically their driver stacks) and software providers are ready to deal with the new OS. If the software or hardware doesn't spceifically say that it is compatible with a particular os, the likelihood of problems increases dramaticaly.

I purchase mostly dell lattidue E series laptops and dell optiplex 700 series with windows 7 and it works fine, but all of the software we run is windows 7 certified.

Lastly, make sure you have installed all of the most recent updates from windows, and driver updates from the computer manufacturer.

With all that being said, I run ubuntu karmic at home on the workstations, and have two "home theatre pc's" running mythdora as a dvr. Linux rocks I wish it would climb in market share :)

This is a Dell loaded from the factory. Only software is MS Office 2003.

I was looking in the registry Ray, and couldn't find anything.

Thanks for all the sugestions everyone.

if you go to support.dell.com click on downloads and drivers and it will ask for the service tag and present you with all the drivers and bios updates for it.

I did that thanks. There were 34 downloads. I didn't notice anything being installed though.
