Around here you gotta get the morels before the wild turkeys do. They eat the hell out of them.

I spend countless hours in the woods metal detecting fall thru spring and see tons of mushrooms but I know so little about them. Summertime is right out. Between the skeeters and ticks (especially ticks) and the heat / humidity SE Virginia woods are not fun in the summer. Let's not forget the nasty green vines covered in deadly thorns either. I hate that stuff.

I'm sure there are plenty of edible mushrooms to be found near me, but I don't know anything about them and don't know anyone who does...

Look for dead or dying elm trees... morels quite frequently are found there. Bugs bunny won't be there.

I have some friends who make a living with Morels and Blueberries. This year they harvested over 9100# of Morels. (That's a lot of Morels) They sun dry them. You can tell sun dried Morels from dehydrated ones from the color. Sun dried Morels sell for $25/oz. Right now they're harvesting their blueberry crop but if anyone is interested here's their website. https://pineywoodmorelsseasonalfruitveg.com/contact/pineywood-morels-seasonal-fruit-vegetables/ I bought a pound of them. Last night we had Filet Mignon with Morels and wild rice. MMMMM.

We don't have many places here where I live in Northern Ontario for Morels but sure wish we did. When I was a kid we would go with our parents mushroom hunting in the fall. Usually around Sept 15th. You would have to wear red as that was the start of hunting season for birds. My Grandparent came from Ukraine and mushroom hunting was a big part of their life. The most common one we picked were Armillara Ostouee (Dark Honey Fungus)
After a good day of picking mushrooms then came the cleaning. Checking for worms and such. Mom would can them and next year it would start all over again. Lot wild blueberries up here but you need to be careful of were they spray pesticides. Most areas are marked with warning signs.

There some really good Apps on mushrooms

Great thing about the oyster mushroom is that there are no false look alikes in the western hemisphere that are deadly. So it is a great mushroom for beginners, and it tastes awesome!

I love mushrooms, but don’t trust myself so have to go to a local “mushroom guy” for local morels, oyster, etc. they also grow maitake and others all year around which is nice! I wish I had the brain for hunting them, but fear I’d be dead or tripping if I tried!

Here is a way to tell using a spore print. Set the mushroom cap on a piece of paper overnight. If the spore print on the paper is black it's edible, If it is black and white or all white it's not. If you cut it and the edge turns purple it' a hallucinogen.
I read that in the Mother Earth News a long time ago. :)

Not true. It depends on the species of mushroom. The white Oyster mushrooms give a white spore print.

...as do honey mushrooms. I am sure there are more. Not sure about the hallucinogen though. I do know that the red one with white spots grows all over our deer lease....never picked any or been tempted to try it though....

I stand corrected. Someone should tell Mother Earth News. Thanks. I think I read it in the 60's. Another myth blown. :)
How about If it's hollow you can swallow?

Never heard that saying. One thing I do know is that with the exception of a handful of mushrooms, there is no one way to tell them apart. You have to look at a number of features and take into account where the mushroom was growing. There are some great mushroom I.D. books out there...they are very thick and thorough though....

I will stick to ordering from Jed's Mushroom guy.

Oh, this statement is very dangerous.

The Parasol Mushroom (Macrolepiota Procera) has a white spore print, as does the Deathcap (Amanita phalloides). The second mushroom could kill you.

Mushrooms should always be picked if they have 100% of all the distinctive characteristics for that particular species. I'm a bit sensitive about stuff like this because I know people who died while taking mushroom picking lightly.

Stay safe and pick only what you are 100% sure of. :)

Deathcaps and parasols do not resemble oysters is any way whatsoever. I suppose someone might confuse something with a
Porcini,(if an absolute idiot) but unless one is fiddling around with Little white Mushrooms in the spring, or inkys if you don’t know just you’re looking for, it’s not that hard to stay safe.
But please, stay scared. It means that the rest of us can spend September through spring eating the really good stuff…
Morels are good, but I’d much rather have a plate full of Chantarelles or Shrimp of the Woods…
