I hate to say it but I must have 20 different commercial pork rib rubs in my collection and I'm getting ready to toss most of them out as they are two years old or more.
I was cooking some ribs yesterday and I did a quick taste test to sample them trying to decide which to use and I'm unimpressed with a lot of them.
The stores I shop at seem to offer the same old ones I have now and I'm wondering how to "discover" new offerings?
I could list all of them but I think I have the ones everybody else uses so now what?

I like Jeff’s recipe which you can purchase here on the site also Tuffy Stones sweet heat, heath Riles competition rub and Mikes extra hot honey. I’ve been using quite a bit lately

Exactly what I’m looking for.
Now I can rebuild my rub collection after dumping the ancient ones.

I'm a fan of Jeff's, need to make up some more since I'm out. I also like to try some off the shelf. If salt is listed as first ingredient I pass. $10 is the usual price for off the shelf here. But, usually a blend of SPG or SPOG is cheaper and can be made at home.

I’m a little weird I I like hot and spicey on the meat side and sweet on the bone side.

912smoker 912smoker Lanes makes some good rubs! No doubt.

I am a huge Meat Church fan. For ribs I like their Hot Honey Hog alot! if you heat adverse their Honey Hog BBQ is also a winner. Both are my goto's for ribs. I like the hot, but one of our kids cant take any heat.

Another vote for Jeff’s.

Commercial rubs I am pretty picky… but like Heath Riles, Cosmos, Meat Church and Malcom Reeds rubs. I am really wanting to try 912smoker 912smoker Keith suggested Lanes.

I work with a few South Africans and they kept telling I had to try Six Gun Grill BBQ Seasoning by Crown National. I ordered some through eBay a while back and cooked up some spare ribs at work. Gotta say I was pleasantly surprised and it worked very well on the ribs.
I was main cook for a fundraising event beginning of this month and used this seasoning on 20 of the racks and asked for feedback. Everyone that came back liked the flavor profile and all were surprised when I told them it originated in S.A.

Gotta try it son!
I have been in contact with them and we're working on a rep deal for SE GA.
Should also lead into other "GA Grown"
products in the future.

I like to mix it up with ribs. My top 5 producers, in no particular order:

Meat Church -- Honey Hog, Holy Gospel
Killer Hogs -- The Barbeque Rub
Plowboys -- Yardbird (yep, good on ribs too)
SuckleBuster's -- Hog Waller
Kosmos -- Honey Killer Bee

Unfortunately, Oakridge went out of business in 2022.

If you like some sweat heat, these are pretty good. Lower sodium than a lot of others out there. I haven't tried the Reaper yet but the Scorpion is tasty.

I usually use regular Honey Hog on my pork ribs. I don't think it has enough spice, but I was worried that Hot Honey Hog would be too overpowering with the heat. (I like heat for a lot of foods, I just prefer more of a peppery spice on my pork ribs.)

I've occasionally tried <this> and <that> to pair with the Honey Hog to add some spice, but never hit on it, until I added just a few sprinkles of Holy Gospel to the meat side of the ribs to top of a generous coating of Honey Hog. I'm guessing it was the higher concentration of black pepper and paprika that did it, and the fam agreed that those were the best pork ribs in a while.

Its not really that hot. If you put your finger in it, it seems hot. But a lot of that cooks out. I feel like its pretty mild. But of course heat is subjective.

If you seem to be always looking for the one and not quite finding what you want, switch gears. Let me first suggest, give more time for a rub to work. I am 5-7 days typically and have tested it and can tell the difference. Rubbing right before smoking is basically wasting the rub. You might be surprised on the flavor pickup.

From here try a "modifier" and mod a rub you like but is just not quite there. Mods could just about be anything. Accent or other umami boosters/mustard powder/bouillons/unique chili powders/more spices you like. I am ALWAYS playing around. I get inspiration from things. One time making pickled eggs I realized jsut how much I LOVE the smell of pickling spice. On whim for ribs, I took a rub I liked and added a little (ground) pickling spice and yeast extract and really liked what it did.
