They're sending me a prepaid label to return it. I looked it up, and under Federal law it's mine to keep, due to  a law resulting from past scams where merchants sent unsolicited merchandise and then sent unsuspecting customers to collections. However, I'd have trouble justifying keeping a $1400 item that I didn't pay for. Such is life I guess. Would've been nice to not have to buy the wife a new computer though.

Thought for a minute there that the universe had thrown me a bone. HA!!

Sometimes it sucks to actually have a conscience.
Thumbs Up

Having worked for a computer company in the past and now working for a freight company that ships for a major computer company I can say you did the right thing. When they lose serial numbered units like that they often get put into a database as lost\stolen.

Not saying something bad would happen but if something ever went wrong with it you probably could not get service for it. Even though the law you looked up said you could keep it though if you tried to get it serviced\repaired etc. and it was on the database they have as lost or stolen you could technically be investigated or possibly prosecuted for theft or fraud. You had the knowledge that you ordered the product and it arrived to you after you reported it missing. It is one of those things that could go either way.

Once the company makes the insurance claim no one investigates or tracks a 1400$ computer. Is one of those things that no one pays for but we actually all do.

The CSR told MD to return the computer. CSR knows the computer is off the books. Who can say he won't keep it for him/herself. I am sure this is not the first time this happens. They can very well have a deal between the return desk and CS desk to pocket these things.

What happens to it is not my concern. I did what the little voice in my head (and several of you here) told me and I plan on sleeping very well tonight.

I didn't mean that to sound smug or self righteous by the way. I actually wish I could've justified keeping it.

You didn't sound smug. Not questioning your decision. I was just throwing my 2c in.

Hope karma really exists and bite you in the back for what you did. you deserve it. Stand by that phone/email....a great job offer is on the way.

Good luck.

You did the right thing.

If the CSR or someone else is stealing it, that's OK.

Let them get the bite taken out of their tail.

That job offer is coming and I believe you've helped it along.

My life experience says that good things happen to good people. I hope I am right and that your employment situation improves. Good luck!

You knew what you were gonna do from the beginning, I could tell by your opening post. It wasn't a question of doing the right thing, because your mind was made up already to do the right thing.

You were looking for a Moral Loophole, to which there is none.

You are a Good man and I am Happy to see the folks on here feel the same way.

Thanks everybody. Squib, I think you're right. I think I was looking for a moral loophole, and as you said, there just wasn't one.
