Modification to smoker

I have an outdoor gourmet combo with a side smoker. Someone mentioned necessary upgrades for the heat vent to distribute heat more evenly but I can't seem to find it. Other than purchasing an electronic temp probe what can I do for this smoker to make use of what I have?
