So after reading many many pages about the Mini WSM's I think I have it pretty well figured out but I have a few questions I couldn't really find answers to.

1. Silver or Gold and why do you think it's better? (I think I know the answer to this one but I would like to hear your opinions.)

2. I've seen the 3 most popular heat deflectors used. Terra Cotta pot, cast iron fry pan, pie plate with water. Has anyone tried a pie plate or metal pan with sand instead of water?

3. I've seen everyone using charcoal briquets, does anyone use lump?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Gold has vents on the side thus no need for a bottom vent cover, It also has a handle that fits over the top lid handle.

Silver has a bottom vent which means you will need a pan with holes to keep ash from clogging the vent (not needed if you dont want)

I like the clay pot, less expensive and i dont have to cut up my cast iron. If it cracks got to wallynotsosmart and buy a new one, 3 cooks with mine and no problems.

Pie plate is a good idea to but when then you will need to add water when gone, dont think i want sand in my smoking area.

I have used lump, burns hotter temp raises fast.
