I want to make a mini uds just for doing fattys so I don't need to fire the big uds if I'm not cooking something else, what would be a good size drum, also any tips from people who have built a mini would be appreciated

I would use a 15 gallon.

The only problem with building a mini-WSM is that the 32qt tamale pots are super hard to find anymore. The mini-WSM is hard to beat. it's a great little smoker and mine are the smokers I use the most.

Gentleman......

I am no expert as I learn from everyone on here all the time...but here is the mini uds I just built from a 16 gallon steel drum that are free at most oil change places.  http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/t/233461/mini-uds-with-help-from-sawzall

Send me a PM....I will answer any question.....I am still trying to figure out how to run mine with the smallest diffuser I can...as I love the southern taste of the fat dripping on the coals.
